Sign Up & Authentication

env.cat uses Clerk for authentication, providing a secure and modern auth experience.

Creating Your Account

1. Visit env.cat

Go to https://env.cat and click "Get Started" or "Sign Up".

2. Choose Authentication Method

Email & Password (Recommended)

  • Enter your email address
  • Create a strong password (8+ characters)
  • Verify your email (check your inbox)

OAuth Providers (Optional)

If enabled in your instance:

  • Google
  • GitHub
  • Microsoft

3. Email Verification

After signing up with email:

  1. Check your inbox for a verification email
  2. Click the verification link
  3. You'll be redirected to the env.cat dashboard

Didn't receive the email?

  • Check your spam folder
  • Click "Resend verification email"
  • Wait 60 seconds between resend attempts

First Login

After verifying your email, you'll be automatically logged in and redirected to the dashboard.

Personal Tenant

On first login, env.cat automatically creates a personal tenant for you:

  • Name: Your email address
  • Role: Owner
  • Type: Personal (free)

All your keys and bundles are scoped to this tenant.

Session Management

Session Duration

Clerk sessions are valid for:

  • Active: 7 days (with activity)
  • Idle: 30 minutes (no activity)

You'll be automatically logged out after idle timeout.

Stay Signed In

Clerk uses secure, httpOnly cookies to keep you signed in across browser sessions.

Your session persists even after:

  • Closing browser tabs
  • Restarting your browser
  • System reboots

Manual Sign Out

Click your avatar in the top-right corner → "Sign Out"

Account Security

Password Requirements

  • Minimum 8 characters
  • Mix of uppercase and lowercase recommended
  • Include numbers and symbols for strength

Password Reset

Forgot your password?

  1. Go to https://env.cat/sign-in
  2. Click "Forgot password?"
  3. Enter your email
  4. Check your inbox for reset link
  5. Create a new password

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Available in: Production instances with Clerk Pro

Enable MFA for enhanced security:

  1. Go to Settings → Security
  2. Click "Enable MFA"
  3. Scan QR code with authenticator app (Authy, Google Authenticator, 1Password)
  4. Enter verification code
  5. Save backup codes

Switching Tenants

If you're a member of multiple tenants (teams):

  1. Click your avatar in the top-right
  2. Select "Switch tenant"
  3. Choose from available tenants

Your current tenant is displayed in the header.

Account Management

Profile Settings

Update your profile:

  1. Click your avatar → "Profile"
  2. Edit:
    • Display name
    • Email address (requires verification)
    • Avatar image
  3. Click "Save"

Email Preferences

Manage email notifications:

  1. Go to Settings → Notifications
  2. Toggle preferences:
    • Approval requests (mobile/email)
    • Team invitations
    • Security alerts
  3. Click "Save"

Troubleshooting

Can't Verify Email

Issue: Verification link expired

Solution:

  1. Go to https://env.cat/sign-in
  2. Try signing in with your email/password
  3. You'll see "Email not verified" banner
  4. Click "Resend verification"

Account Locked

Issue: Too many failed login attempts

Solution:

  1. Wait 15 minutes (automatic unlock)
  2. Or click "Forgot password?" to reset

Can't Access Account

Issue: Lost access to email

Solution:

  • Contact support at support@env.cat
  • Provide proof of account ownership
  • Team owners can remove/re-invite members

Privacy & Data

What Data is Stored?

Clerk stores:

  • Email address
  • Hashed password (never plaintext)
  • Authentication events (login times, IPs)
  • Profile information (name, avatar)

env.cat stores:

  • User ID (from Clerk)
  • Tenant memberships
  • Keys and bundles (encrypted at-rest)

Data Deletion

To delete your account:

  1. Contact support@env.cat
  2. Confirm deletion request
  3. All data deleted within 30 days

Warning: This action is irreversible. All keys, bundles, and approvals will be permanently deleted.
